Gerd Ludwig became a National Geographic photographer in the early 1990's, covering environmental issues and the impact they have on people. In 1993, Ludwig documented the aftermath of the 1986 Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant explosion in Ukraine.
Ludwig successfully raised $23k through donations and returned to Chernobyl in April for the explosions 25th anniversary. He was able to go deep into the buildings and cover the long term effects Chernobyl had on the Ukrainian land and people.
Not only is the story of Chernobyl amazing, Ludwig's photos put you in the heart of the devastation and suffering.
